Feast or famine - Another light wind event for the 700’s
With a forecast which wasn’t quite setting the heart racing, the 700 fleet gathered at Lymington Town Sailing Club over the weekend of the 14th and 15th April for the second round of the 2007 Fat Face circuit.
After a number of delays the race committee started race one as soon as a zephyr held steady and with sufficient strength to set a course. Paul Hayden led the fleet up the first leg to round the windward mark first followed by Rob Chaplin and Matt Humphreys. These three seemed to have things sewn up down the first run until they all proceeded to sail through the finish having misread the course board. This allowed local sailor Ben Cooper to take the lead followed by Andy Heissig joining the fleet from the 600’s for the weekend. Matt was able to recover and steal second place back down the last run but it was Ben who led at the finish.
Race two saw some of the most dramatic changes in wind direction with kites being flown at times up the second beat. The race started well in the best wind of the weekend with the majority of the fleet going left up the first beat. Matt and Andy White chose the alternative option which almost paid as they were just led at the windward mark by Ben Cooper, making the most of his local knowledge. Matt managed to gybe inside Ben at the spacer mark to take the lead through to the finish.
The final race saw the entire fleet head for the shoreline and the slacker tide. Matt and Andy judged the tack best and pulled out a significant lead over the fleet through to the finish. Some massive holes saw many of the fleet struggling to make it through the finish line with some frustrating place changes as a result. Mention must also be made of Rob Chaplin who took a very serious dislike to one particular buoy and decided to attack it for what can only be assumed are personal reasons.
Sunday dawned with beautiful sunshine and a very light and fickle breeze. The race committee sensibly held the fleet on shore and when the sea breeze showed no sign of arriving by lunchtime further racing was cancelled.
