And finally..

195 high performance, asymmetric skiff sailors turned out to battle for glory on Chichester Harbour's highest, fastest rising tides of the year in this years tide ride last weekend. 15 RS700's joined the 12 Musto Skiffs to do battle.  Congratulations to the Musto Skiff Sailors for coming out on top this year.

As a point of interest if you add the RS700 UK national entry to the Musto Skiff UK national entry this year nearly 100 sailors competed in
single handed asymmetric skiff sailing national championships. The future looks good don't you think!!!

Hope to see many of you at Grafham!

RS700 2006 European Championship report

Another record entry of 36 RS700’s gathered at Riva for the inaugural 2006 European Championship.  Hot favourite for the title after his win at the Nationals was Paul Bayliss.  The real question was whether the classes other heavy weather experts could really put together a significant challenge.

The fleet launched excitedly for the practise race on Sunday as the Ora built on schedule.  Unfortunately a thunder cloud marched menacingly down the west side of the lake forcing an abandonment as most of the fleet were flattened by the westerly squalls which had completely overridden the southerly Ora.

Day 1 of the racing promised to be a classic Garda day.  The legendary Matt Stark started his championship well by port tacking the fleet and leading the charge to the windward mark. Alex Southon lead around the top mark followed by Andy White and Paul Bayliss, Bayliss took the lead as Southon and White capsized on the first gybe and sailed on to a convincing win.  Andy held second place until rounding the wrong hook mark which let Alex in to take second with Jerry Wales third and Andy fourth.

The second race of the day resulted in a much larger contingent trying the port tack starts, preferring to take some sterns in order to get right to the cliffs as soon as possible. Bayliss lead from the start followed by Southon and White. The day finished with a classic RS meal and disco at the club along with the other RS fleets.

Day 2 started with a seminar by Paul Bayliss where he shared his 6 tips for success even before the race starts.  Once again Garda served up a classic Ora breeze which allowed Dave Geal to monster the first beat and lead at the first mark.  Unfortunately he had to slow down to avoid some 800’s on the first run which allowed Paul Bayliss to take the lead which he held to the finish followed by Steve Butcher who sailed a convincing race with Southon 3rd followed very closely by Jerry Wales.

Race four Bayliss took the lead and had a convincing win, with White and Alex Koukourakis battling for second, Andy got 2nd on the line Koukourakis was 3rd and Leigh Albrecht 4th. The day ended with an excellent RS700n fleet meal at the Grand Hotel with a great turnout of friends and families.

Day 3 saw the fleet out on the water early waiting for the breeze. The Ora kicked in late and there were further delays as some of the other fleets decided to play general recall with the race committee.  The race posed some different questions for the fleet as we were on the middle race course rather than the cliff side.  Do you gybe immediately or does it pay to go down the lake first. Classically cliffs paid once again as Bayliss dominated the race from start to finish with White 2nd and Wales 3rd.  Andrew Peake worked through the fleet to secure a well deserved 4th.

The Carabinieri launch rolled up and advised the race committee of some impending bad weather which saw the second race of the day cancelled.  This resulted in the spectacular sight of more than 200 RS boats of various types hoisting their kites and sending it down the lake in the rising wind.  Memorable!

Thursday started with an excellent seminar on reading the weather by Mark Littlejohn.  Paul Bayliss now looked to be in an unassailable position for the championship barring some disaster.  The real question was whether anyone could finish ahead of him on the water and break his string of first places.  Racing started in classic Garda conditions. Bayliss once again lead around the top mark followed by Butcher and southon. Southon spectacularly collided with an upwind RS800 which took him out of the running for the race. This let Koukourakis battle with Steve Butcher for second. Butcher capsized on the last gybe letting White through to 3rd.

Friday’s seminar was insightful talk on boat preparation and maintenance by RS guru Alex Southon.  Paul Bayliss did not actually need to sail the last day but went out anyway.  This is Garda after all and sailing these high performamce boats here is always a pleasure.  The race for the positions was still definitely on with Andy White, Alex Southon and Jerry Wales all in with a shout.  Paul Bayliss led the charge to the cliffs but it was Andy White sailing higher who was able to tack onto his hip and lead at the first mark.  Having taken the lead Andy immediately tried to throw the race by losing sight of the leeward mark, over standing it by some distance and letting Paul through to lead up the second beat.  However Andy was not so easily beaten, breaking through again to take a well deserved race win with Andy Peake coming through to take second.  Alex Southon recovered from a mediocre start to take fourth in the race and third overall as Jerry Wales had an unusually bad day at the office.  The final race of the day was cancelled as thunder clouds gathered over Riva cancelling out the Ora.

Paul Bayliss took home the spectacular new European Championship trophy having completed the double this year.  The next event for the RS700’s on the Fat Face circuit is Weston on 12th August.  See you there!

Hardware upgrades

Alex has been busy working on some detail improvements for the RS700 over the summer. If you are interested in any of these upgrades please give him a call at LDC for more details.

Pump Cleats

In the past some people have had problems with the bed of these cleats deforming allowing the blue rocker to over rotate and jam, effectively locking the halyard at a very inconvenient moment! Add to this, the increasing use of thinner spectra/dyneema halyards and the problem was getting progressively worse. The solution from LDC has been to have the cleats custom modified by the addition of a thin steel plate, welded on top of the original bed. This both strengthens the bed of the cleat avoiding the deflection, whilst also reducing the distance between the bed and the rocker which supports the use of thinner lines.

Rack collars
The original rack system allows a certain amount of play between the carrier tubes on the boat and the racks which can be a bit disconcerting until you realise that nothing is broken. LDC have introduced a simple system of collars, which significantly reduce this play and improve the quality feel of the boat. These are fitted as standard on new boats but can be retro fitted to existing racks. If you are interested please contact Alex at LDC as the precise specification depends on your rack configuration (intermediates or extensions fitted etc).

Coming Shortly
Still in the pipeline:
• A new version of the spinnaker sock which has a couple of strategically placed pockets for halyards and other essential bits and bobs. Most importantly, it will be available in ultra fast black.
• A bit further out there will be a new version of the rack system which will work for all rack settings from hole 1 to hole 8 without the need to purchase extension bars on the wider settings. Associated with this will be a revised cover as the folded width of the racks will have to increase. This is probably not a retro fit option unless maybe you’ve had a serious bump, but it’s good to know the boat is being improved slowly without compromising the one –design performance of the class

Rooster Aqua Pro Winter Sailing Gloves
These are quite simply the best winter sailing gloves that I have come across.

My previous experience of winter sailing gloves has been of thick gloves that impede the movement of the fingers and remove the ability to feel the ropes properly. The Rooster Aqua Pro gloves are made from a similar material to the Rooster Aqua Fleece, the material is thin and stretchy with a thin layer of fleece on the inside. This enables the gloves to be the same thickness as summer sailing gloves, giving the full range of movement and feel. The gloves eliminate wind-chill keeping your hands nice and toasty even in a gale. The fleecy inner is comfortable and very quickly warms up even when putting the gloves on wet.

I took a pair of these gloves with me on the Round Britain and Ireland race this year and was very impressed. Off the Shetland Isles I was very glad of them, I was still able to feel and grip the sail on the foredeck for sail changes when some of the crew were resorting to taking their winter sailing gloves off. Even coming on watch in at 4 in the morning and putting them on wet was fine because they warmed up within a minute from the heat of my hands. I would thoroughly recommend these gloves to everyone, and I will certainly be wearing them this winter.

RS Fat Face Circuit visits Weston...

A promising 15 knot forecast prompted 24 RS700 sailors to make the journey to Weston Sailing Club, on Southampton Water. They were greeted by a shifty force three north westerly.

With Richard Lovering making his debut, Pete Greenhalgh returning to the class after a summer in the Volvo 40’s, as well as the usual suspects, including the new National and European Champion Paul Bayliss, the scene looked set for a hotly contested weekend.

Race one was run in 12 knots of breeze with a port bias line. Bayliss immediately showed his intentions and pace, by leading the fleet up the short windward leg. It was a lead he never surrendered. The race behind him was contested by Leigh Albright and Andy Peake, with Peake coming through in the end to take second.

Race two got underway in increasing pressure. Swapping from race mode to safety mode now being the order of the day - it was Albrecht, Peake and Lovering who contested the first three places, with Lovering gaining on the upwind legs but losing out downwind with a more conservative approach. Albrecht was to take the win on the water, but later retired after being protested for a startline infringementt. This promoted Peake to first, Lovering to second and Jon Heissig up to third.

Race three saw the pressure grow further. Bayliss charged upwind, capsized on the final tack but still just led round the windward mark. The whole fleet was then hit by over 20 knots, which saw half practicing their breaststroke and the other half tacking round to avoid the gybe. Lovering’s conservative downwind approach ensured his stick continued to point skywards and saw him lead Peake and Paul Hayden around the leeward mark. Lovering slowed on the next downwind leg to let Peake through, which is how the race ended. Bayliss fought through to fourth after a time consuming capsize. Overnight, it was Peake first, Lovering second and Andy Holland, who had a consistent first day, in third.

Sunday dawned to more wind and grey skies. After a one hour postponement to give the sailors enough water to launch in, race four got underway. Again, Bayliss stormed up the first beat, but more closely pursued by Andy Irons, Holland, Lovering, Rob Chaplin and Peake. After a number of capsizes on the first run, Bayliss pulled out a 300m lead from Peake. This gap was closed to one boat length on the penultimate lap, but Bayliss stayed in front after a mistimed tack from Peake.

Race five, and the wind strength had increased to a consistent force six. The remaining sailors were treated to some phenomenal downwind sailing – 25 knots and flat water! Bayliss and Peake again led the fleet away, with Bayliss falling back halfway up the first beat after being teabagged as he slammed into a wave. The downwind leg was over in the blink of an eye and resulted in Bayliss rounding first, followed by Andy Holland and Matt Connor. Peake and Irons were busy righting their boats after gybing and dropping incidents. With the race officer now becoming concerned for competitor safety, the race was shortened to two laps, with Bayliss in first, Holland in second and Peake recovering to third.

The sensible decision was taken to abandon race six. Overall, Peake had just done enough to retain his overnight lead and Bayliss climbed into second spot. Andy Holland rounded off a solid weekend in third place and Lovering, in his first 700 event, was fourth. The top five was rounded off by RS Journeyman, Andy Irons.

In the silver fleet Matt Conner and Paul Hayden coped best with the conditions shadowing the leading group and completing all of the races, with local sailor James Ross coming in third.

By the end of the day, Weston SC was full of beaming faces after an awesome sail. Credit must go to the race officer and his team, who ran two Sunday races in testing conditions which may have prompted other RI’s to raise the abandonment flag.   Analysis after the event showed the highest gust speed at 32.9 knots with several other recorded gusts of +30 knots.

Thanks go to Weston for hosting the event and to our Sponsor’s fat Face for their continued support.

The final Fat Face RS700 Circuit heads for Weymouth & Portland Sailing Academy ...

The last of this year’s Fat Face racing circuit events took place over the bank holiday weekend of 26th/27th August. A fresh breeze of between 15-20 knots greeted the keen fleet for this final show-down of the 2006 season. In the Gold fleet Andy ‘PG’ Peake & Matt Humphreys had taken it to the wire for the top circuit spot while old master, Andy Irons & the well travelled Andy Holland from Hunstanton were battling it out for the bottom step of the podium.  The Silver fleet was even more open with a number of helms needing a good result to complete the series and take the top spot from the current leader Ian Nolan.

The racing got under way in overcast conditions with Irons taking first blood leading at the top mark.  However an oscillating breeze favoured those who gybe-set on the first downwind leg and it was Peake who edged through to gain best advantage closely followed by Humphries and Koukourakis. Peake seemed to have it in the bag until an unforced error saw him uncharacteristically swim leaving the door open for Humphries, now over his ‘mal de mer’, to sail to victory in race 1.

Portland Harbour gave us some further testing conditions with gusts being recorded up to 30 knots during the next 2 races as the breeze failed to settle. Any lead established was never secure and those following always had a chance to make back ground. Tim Dickinson picked his way best round the second race course as Peake again managed an unforced capsize.   Peake hit the front again in race 3 and this time managed to stay there taking a commanding lead into Sunday.

For once there was a very serious atmosphere in the club after sailing as the calculators were busy working on the standings, pasta was being consumed and orange juices downed.  The fleet clearly had a very quiet Saturday night which didn’t involve beer, nor a monster curry (how many poppadoms?) and carefully avoided the nightclubs which stayed open till 0500.  As a result they all emerged on Sunday morning looking at their very best, full of energy and ready for the days battles to commence.

Very similar conditions prevailed on Sunday morning with the aches and pains from Saturday (that’s sailing aches and beer pains) still fresh in everyone’s minds. Peake made no mistakes out the traps in race 4 and as hard as Irons tried he couldn’t catch him. Koukourakis and Holland were both on the pace behind the leading pair.

By now a pecking order had been established and with the wind still very much around the same 15-20 knots great sailing conditions continued. Peake once again stamped his authority on race 5 with his Eastbourne under-study, Koukourakis, hard on his transom. Irons held a watching brief in 3rd happy to keep his nearest rival Humphries behind him.

Peake had done enough for the win and also took the 2006 series title without needing the complete race 6. This was just as well as both he and Koukourakis were a little premature on the line which cost the latter dear in terms of overall position. Jon Heissig showed more like his normal form by winning race 6 while Irons completed his consistent series with another 2nd.

In the silver fleet Paul Hayden appeared to be locked together for most of the weekend with Hayden just edging it by a capsize, to not only take the event prize but the silver circuit overall.

Gold Fleet1st Andy ‘PG’ Peake2nd Andy Irons3rd Matt Humphries – Rooster Sailing

Silver Fleet1st Paul Hayden2nd Ian Nolan – Sail4Cancer.org    With the wind blowing at 15-20 knots and the sun shining, Weymouth had provided some of the very best sailing conditions which we’ve seen this year.  The boats really perform at their best in these conditions making this one of those champagne days which make it all worthwhile.

Our thanks go to the event sponsors Fat Face for their continued support and to Rosie and Laurie and their teams at WPNSA for their flawless organisation and race management.
