RS700 Fat Face Circuit Event 2

Hunstanton Sailing Club - 22nd/23rd April 2006

Despite a forecast of 1-3mph all weekend and this being a brand new venue for the fleet, 24 RS700 competitors from all over the country made the trip to Hunstanton for the second Fat Face racing circuit event of the year. The days proceedings started with the presentation of Fat Face rash vests to the current series leaders in the Gold and Silver fleets, Matt Humphries and Ian Nolan respectively.

Race 1 started in a very light breeze after one general recall caused by a large wind-shift. Jon Heissig reached the top mark first to lead down the run. The fleet compressed at the spreader mark and with barely enough wind to set the spinnakers boats struggled to avoid going backwards with the tide. Heissig took the middle of the run but found a hole and was passed on the left and right. Jerry Wales managed to keep his spinnaker flying better than most and took the win followed by Pete Purkiss in second. Leigh Albrecht found a personal gust and went from 9th round the windward mark to finish third.

The sea breeze filled in to a decent force 2 for the start of race 2. Off the start line there was a wide split in the fleet, with a difference of opinion of whether to go right and out of the tide or left for more breeze. As the fleet recombined at the windward mark it turned out that left had given a slight edge. The fleet enjoyed the fresher conditions, trapezing downwind with much place changing. Nigel Walbank showed very good speed to take the win followed by Tony Freer and Jon Heissig.

Race 3 was sailed in the same conditions but with a few more shifts thrown in. Matt Humphries did a classic start-line capsize at the pin end of the line. Leigh Albrecht and Pete Purkiss sailed away from the fleet to finish in that order but further down the fleet things were very bunched and competition was closely fought. Alex Koukourakis was doing well until a broken tiller extension slowed him down. Jon Heissig was the best of the rest and came through to take third again.

The Saturday night prizegiving saw the Fat Face rash vests being passed to the overnight leaders, Pete Purkiss showing his class after a long absence from the circuit to take the gold and Dave Gorringe taking the lead in the silver fleet. Two very different physiques proving how well the equalisation system works on these boats.

The fleet then descended en-masse to the Rose and Crown for a night of good food and some very dubious cabaret entertainment provided by the local Hunstanton sailors!

Sunday morning dawned bright with the hope of a light breeze. After the morning inspection by the committee and some hasty application of stickers, the first race on started promptly but in a dying south westerly breeze. Ian Nolan from the home club led at the windward mark but sailed into a hole down wind passing the lead to Rob Chaplin. The second lap was sailed in virtually no wind and seemed to last forever. Eventually the fleet was rewarded with a finish after a very frustrating last few yards. The eventual winner was Rob Chaplin followed by Andy Irons and Matt Humphries.

Before the second race the predicted northerly breeze swept in with a vengeance and the course had to be swung round by 180º. The northerly force 4-5 quickly kicked up lots a steep swell which soon resulted in a fine display of submarining and cartwheeling. A few revelled in the conditions, and after some three laps the first home was Steve Marshall followed by Matt Humphries and Andy Irons.

With time running out, the last race had a congested start in steep, slamming waves mastered by Gorringe and Koukourakis who arrived together at the windward mark. Koukourakis blasted off to the wrong mark, letting Marshall into second with Gorringe third. However it was Matt Humphreys who got the layline right to win what had turned out to be one-lap sprint with all boats finishing in quick succession. Pete Purkiss dropped out of contention for the lead by dropping the mainsheet twenty yards form the finish and suffered a painfully slow capsize to windward.

Matt Humphries sailing “RoosterBooster” sailed consistently to take the overall win and maintain his lead in the Fat Face Rankings. Dave Gorringe put together a good series to take the lead in the Silver. Special prizes were awarded to Rob Chaplin for the longest ‘endo’ in a 700 and to Andy Holland for the perpendicular nosedive, which scored a perfect 10 with the Committee.

Our thanks go to Fat Face for their continued support of the series and to the local sponsors, Kings Lynn Audi, The Rose and Crown and Premier Fitness who all contributed to a very successful event.

It was a fantastic weekend overall, with superb organisation of the racing, the facilities and the entertainment. A very good time was had by all on the lovely north Norfolk coast.

RS700 Fat Face Circuit Event 3

Stokes Bay Sailing Club - 6th/7th May 2006

29 RS700s turned out at Stokes Bay SC for the third Fat Face Circuit event of the year despite a forecast of light winds and rain.

A football superstar style injury reduced the entry to 29 boats, but a mix of new and old faces had some incredibly tight racing with consistency seeming the requirement to get to the top.

No wind and rain was what the race officer had to contend with but after a short postponement ashore Race 1 was got underway in enough wind to trapeze. Harvey Hillary  in his first 700 event took an early lead but was confused by the 800 and 700 leeward marks allowing Matt Humphreys (Rooster Sailing) and Dave Smithwhite to catch up. Tom Offer gained from heading offshore on the run and was leading the final lap only to tangle with the leeward mark whilst dropping his kite allowing Jon Heissig through to take the win. Tom recovered in time to hold on to second with Humphreys following in third. Paul Hayden was first of the silver fleet finishers, with Hugh Watson close behind.

Race 2 was sailed in much the same conditions with the tide changing inshore adding to the tactical element. The wind stayed up for the second race start, Heissig managed to get clear and looked like getting a second win.  However, the wind started to die and the final run saw Alex Koukourakis pass to get the gun, with Nicky Griffin catching both up for third on a shortened course.  Andy Peake was starting to find his form in light winds, and finished ahead of Humphreys.  Hayden again led the silver fleet, challenged this time by Luke South.

The breeze was dying for Race 3 and with the tide now in full flow there were some interesting raft ups, particularly around the leeward mark. Interestingly there were very few observed to be doing any turns! The notable exception being Steve Marshall who did his after attempting to skewer a fellow competitor (thanks Steve!). Paul Hayden sailed very well in the light conditions, extending out his lead to win by a considerable margin. Harvey Hillary followed finishing in second with Tom Offer in third.

This left Heissig as overnight leader of the gold fleet, ahead of Offer and Hillary.  Hayden was well clear in the silver fleet.

Sunday dawned with a major difference, Sun! Alas still no wind. The race officer was keen to start however there was a reluctance for the fleet to leave the beach. Eventually the fleet launched and the start sequence began just in time for the wind to switch off completely, this heralded a return to the shore under postponement for an ice-cream break. When the breeze did fill in the racing began promptly in trapezing conditions. Harvey Hillary sailed away to win this one, followed by Andy Irons in second and Paul Hayden in third.

The event would be decided on the last race, and Peake hit the front at the windward mark and never looked like being caught, despite passing through the multiple RS800 starts.  Humphreys started a late charge to form moved up through the fleet to second as the breeze dropped on the final run.  Marshall and Eddie Gatehouse had a close race all around the course; Marshalls final gybe inshore for less adverse tide proved the deciding move.  Heissig hung on to fifth, having retired from the previous race to nip ashore and change a broken pole outhaul block, and this was enough to give him the event overall ahead of Peake and Hillary.  Hayden had another good result to easily take the silver fleet prize, and second went to South just ahead of Watson, all receiving Fatface vouchers to spend.

Thanks go to SBSC for a well run event. Next up is the Nationals at Eastbourne, with a line up of subsidised curry and a FREE BEER (thanks to kind sponsors) after sailing every night there should be a bumper turn out.

Ian Nolan has been checking out the Dinghy Park...

We spent some time at the weekend going round the fleet checking out what rig settings people are using. There were 29 boats there so this should give us a good indication of the base settings the majority of people are using including several of the front runners.

Rake (masthead to top of transom) 730 - 740 cm

Mast Pre-Bend (at point of maximum bend) 40-50 mm This varied from about 90mm at one extreme to 10mm (both of whom finished in the top 5) but the majority of people were close to this figure.

Rig tension (measured on the forestay) 400 – 450lb One or two bullies were putting on 560lbs - ouch!

Lower tension (checked without the sail up) – this varied enormously from boat to boat from 'just tight' to up to 5cm of lateral movement. The lowers are often adjusted between races to suit the conditions

A lot of variation in the spreaders but a base setting appears to be 79cm between the shrouds and 18cm measured from a line tied between the shrouds and the back of the mast track.

In light conditions – some people move the shrouds up one hole.

In heavy conditions – most people drop the shrouds one hole.

In very heavy conditions some people raise (not rake) the centreboard 5-10cm.

Cheers and Good Sailing.

See you at the Nationals

A quick update from France...

Well, we had a good first event in the Lac du Der. Half of the fleet comprised of RS Boats coming from France, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Dutchland and Belgium. An RS 800 from Switzerland won this first event of the Breizhskiff Trophy. Watch out for a full report in the next issue!

Cedric Fraboulet

Training at Hayling report

Seven RS700 attended the training session at Hayling on the 29th April and were greeted with 2 knots of breeze on arrival. After a briefing on the shore covering boat set up and tacking and gybing the keen students were gifted with a fabulous 10 knots of breeze. These were great conditions to put into practice all of the tips that Matt Humphrey's had shared.

Over lunch the debrief had a fairly consistent theme which was to use more kicker upwind and less downwind! The top tip for gybing for beginners was to make sure that you sit on the rack after the gybe (rather than in the middle of the boat) so you can get the spinnaker working and the boat moving and then get out on the wire.

After lunch the wind had picked up to over 15 knots and with a short windward leeward course, there was plenty of opportunity to do a bit of swimming! All the participants felt that it had been a great day and that their boat handling and set up had improved considerably.
