RS700
With nearly 80 boats now afloat, and banter in the class of 25 entries
for the inlands it was with sad to see the huge forecast put off so many.
In the event a dozen hardy souls faced 6 races in gusty force 4-7, some
great racing, and many wild rides downwind. Not for a minute did it occur
to anyone to not put the kite up!
Winning 3 of the 6 races, and finishing 2nd in 2 more, Andy White looked
more sure footed than most and in the end was a convincing winner.
Consistent as ever, Carl Vining was never out of the top three, won the
last race in survival conditions, and was safe in 2nd place overall.
With so many of the regulars put off by the forecast, it was down to the
newcomers to fill the remaining slots. Tim Johnson was the best of the
rest, having had his boat for a matter of weeks, he won race 5 and was
third overall ahead of Neil McCallum who proved that finishing races no
matter how windy it gets is the way forward. Mention of Keith Willis
should be made for having had his boat for less than a fortnight, and
finished all races, and clocked in at fifth overall.
With new people joining the ranks each week, the class has set itself a
target to get 40 boats on the start line at the 2002 Nationals at
Weymouth in August, but in the short term the roadshow moves on to
British Steel for the Welsh Area Champs next weekend.
