Results / Gul RS700 Grand Prix Beer SC - 19/06/2010

Despite the forecast for light winds two days of great racing were had at picturesque Beer SC, with significant sampling of the local beverages on both Friday and Saturday night!

After a hour or so delay on Saturday, to wait for the breeze to settle down to a NE the race officer set a course downwind of Seaton. With the tide running east it looked as though going right up the beat to stay offshore longer would pay off but going left, getting the boat going down the waves and then using the extra breeze and the lift that there seemed to be inshore turned out to pay off, at least on most laps. In the first 2 races Tony Dencher seemed to get the better of these shifts to get 2 bullets. With Rob Jones and Jon Heissig getting a second each and Jerry Wales consistent with 2 thirds. The final race on Saturday saw some very big shifts especially around the leeward mark as the breeze died off, with boats on opposite tacks heading the same direction at times. Jon Heissig managed to keep it together best to come first followed by Jerry Wales and then Rob Jones.

Saturday night featured some lovely food laid on by the Beer SC ladies washed down with some beer at the club and then a few local ciders at the Dolphin Hotel, making the steep walk up to the campsite a challenge.

Sunday dawned clear and sunny with a stunning view from the campsite all the way to Portland Bill. After a big breakfast at the beach cafe the sea breeze was filling in nicely. The southerly breeze and constant tide across the course made for very close racing with starts and boatspeed being crucial. Mike Dencher got it spot on in the first 2 races to take 2 bullets with Jon Heissig and Rob Jones runnersup in the first race and Andy Holland and Jon Heissig in the second race. In the final race Andy Holland led from the start with a brilliant port end flyer, with Jon Heissig taking second and Rob Jones making a well timed early gybe to roll Tony Dencher on the last run to grab third place.

Overall for the weekend Jon Heissig took the trophy with Jerry Wales and then Tony Dencher runners up.
