Fifteen RS700s made the journey to Riva Del Garda, with competitors from
the
England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland and even the Antipodes. The
conditions
on Garda were typically idyllic, with a couple of classic �Garda days� to
excite
even the bravest competitors.
Tim Johnson dominated the middle of the regatta, setting up an unbeatable
scoreline
with a combination of good upwind pace and clever sailing, to win the
event
with a race to spare. Paul Bayliss sailed a poor first half of the
regatta,
and left himself a bit to do, and was therefore pleased to snatch second
on
the last day. Carl Vining gets the plaudits for staying upright the
most, with
just two swims in over 9 hours racing in boisterous conditions. Carls
consistency
was enough to give him a comfortable third overall, although he will be
disappointed
not to have kept the first or second places he had held all week.
Neil McCallum and Eddie Gatehouse took fourth and fifth, both showing
that they
have been putting in some useful time in the boat, to keep in touch with
the
front runners. A special mention should be made of Scot, Alan MacKie,
who only
took up dinghy sailing at the start of last year, doing his RYA levels
before
getting an RS700 at the start of 2002. Alan�s determination meant that
he was
impressively getting round the course at this windy venue, and even
posting
a fourth in the final race. Hats off to him, and congratulations to Tim
Johnson
who has secured the Eurocup circuit wins in both light and strong winds.
