Results / Gul RS Solent Grand Slam Stokes Bay - 22/06/2002
A fleet of 20 RS700s turned up for the GUL sponsored circuit event at
Stokes Bay SC. Exciting, close racing was enjoyed by all who weathered
the big waves & wind of Saturday, with a contrasting force 2-3 on Sunday.
Race 1 saw Tim Johnson (Chew Valley) & Andy White (Stokes Bay) zoom off
into an early battle for 1st place, closely followed by current National
Champion, Neil Robinson (HISC). At the start of the final lap, a big
gust hit & wiped out White & Johnson at the windward mark, allowing
Robinson to take line honours, closely followed by Jason Belben (Stokes
Bay). Race 2 was won by Paul Bayliss (HISC) who sailed an excellent
race, to beat White & Johnson in 2nd & 3rd, with Belben in 4th.
Race 3 was won by White who went into the lead over night, followed by
Johnson 2nd & Bayliss 3rd, and Belben 4th.
Sundays weather was perfect 700 weather, bright & sunny with a force 3
breeze.
Races 4,5,6 were held back to back with Bayliss taking 2 bullets out of 3
with a 2nd in the last to take a 1st place overall, followed by Belben
who sailed a perfect last race to win from Bayliss, Vining (Datchet), &
Johnson.
A fantastic weekend was had by all, at a very hospitable & well-organised
club.
The circuit continues to throw up new talent from different areas, with
the class growing from strength to strength at each event. A training
event is to be held at Queen Mary SC on the 13/14 July, just before the
Eurocup event at Lake Garda, and the Nationals at WPSA.
