According to many people the tea and cakes are the most important
things .......***
The Burghfield RS Open on Sunday gave a lucky turnout of 20 RS200s along
with about 20 400s, a lovely autumn sail. It ended the inaugural year for
the RS 200 South East Area Series with the usual prizegiving based on
three scoring events. Well not so usual perhaps as there were no trophies
and no glasses as we ran out of sponsorship and funds. However red wine,
Ugly Wear fleeces and vouchers were happily distributed, unfortunately in
the rush occasioned by the gathering gloom scant mention was made of
crews - very remiss. (From the results it can be seen that the Junior
prize was somewhat under-contested, lots of scope next year folks.) The
team event was easily won by Wembley making one old guy very happy with
his haul of two prizes. David Giles enjoyed his first prize but collected
it in his street clothes whilst his wife, Ailsa, took the photos. The
raffle prize was initially won by David also but he generously insisted
on a redraw to Jo Wotton (and Wembley)'s benefit.
Mention was made of the longest travelling boat; Ben and Liz Alexander
travelled twice from Ipswich to the unluckiest venue, Bough Beech which
hosted TWO beautiful summer days of flat calm. Terrific (small quantities
of) beer and walking were available though. Most surprising venue was
Stewartby, where the whole pond was secured for the day enabling quite
decent windward leewards in any wind direction; thanks are due to the
water skiers. This was topped off with crisp race and on shore management
and copious supplies of free tea. Best in that department by a short head
was Wembley hosting the Welsh Harp event with even more copious supplies.
Dodging the islands at Burghfield was a first for many.
Most of the Gul National RS200 Circuit top twenty participated with the
puzzling exception of Steve Dunn and even more so Jon Lewis the
Burghfield rep, coaches extraordinaire both. They are said to be keener
on sea sailing. Maybe the flukiest wind contest was a dead heat but we
like our ponds 15 minutes drive from home! However the 16 travellers
(from a total of 54 entrants) made a crucial contribution to the numbers
at each event and we hope to see fleets of over 25 next year.
The Series comprises six one day events often associated with training
and is intended to encourage individual boat owners and clubs to travel
to/ hold open meetings for the first time and prepare for the main Fat
Face Circuit. Contact the RS Class association or myself [email protected]
for more details.
