Results / RS Fat Face Racing Circuit Northampton SC - 05/04/2003

Northampton Sailing Club hosted one of the very first RS events in 1994 and the RS classes have held many well organised, well supported and almost without fail, spectacularly breezy events since. This years RS200 and RS400 Fat Face Racing Circuit was well supported with 49 RS200s. The Race Management was slick with very good courses but the northerly wind did not play ball. Saturday saw a very patchy force 1-3 with some horror light wind patchs on the runs. Sunday saw a more steady wind with crews hiking the vast majority of the time up wind but still with some big slants. The standard continues to improve in depth in the 200s, 26 of the boats scored top ten results, many leading helms found it difficult to pull through boats now perfectly capable of staying in the leading group when they get there. With such patchy wind consistency was going to be everything with the series likely to be high scoring and so it proved. David Giles/Fiona Clark won the first race by a margin with Ann Jackson/Alan Skeens second. Hamish Calder/Severine Rees-Jones were over the horizon in race 2 with Steve/Paula Irish very comfortable in second. Race 3 was led for the majority of the race by Paul Dorer/Ian Robertson, part of the Bowmoor Youth team. They lost out though on the on the final beat to Vince Horey/Jane Jones who had led at the first mark only to have a shocker of a first run. Overnight Giles led from Ann Jackson but everyone already had a discard and it was really wide open. Ollie Holden/Sarah Freestone won race 4 from National Champions Tom and Jo Hewitson. The Irishs third place moved them into the lead overall with a 2.3.3 score with several of the other leading contenders having bad races. The last two races were to prove very close throughout. Paul Dorer/Ian Robertson again led race 5 for long periods with very close company. This time they sailed the final part of the race very well to win from John/Chris Blundell, making quite an impression in their first year in 200s, with Steve/Laurie Dunn third. The Irishs challenge disappeared with an 18th. Race 6 was tight with John Lewis/Millie Parsons making the early running until having a problem with a running boat on a beat. Vince Horey/Jane Jones took up the running to win with Martin English/Bridget Cooke (Wembley) in very close company in second. Ashore most of the fleet were unaware who had won but Giles/Clark recovery to 4th and 5th in the last two races from not promising positions was crucial; they were the only boat able to count 5 top ten results. Having won at Bristol and Carsington the Giles/Clark are the form team in 200s. Probably the most impressive performance of the weekend was Dorer and Robertson with 1.2.3 who will be a real force when they work out how to stop getting OCS. Also in her first season helming Trudie Danbury/Graham Ryder were again first Doris in 10th overall. With Ann Jackson also sailing well Sarah Taylor in going to be under real pressure for first lady at the Nationals. After the first 3 major events being inland the RS200 circuits move to the sea now with the start of the Fat Face Eurocup at Carnac over Easter and Round 3 of the Fat Face Circuit at North Berwick over the May Bank Holiday.
